According to preliminary figures, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) recorded higher sales in financial year 2012/2013 (April 1, 2012 to March 31, 2013) than in the previous year thanks to the expected strong fourth quarter. In line with the company’s own forecasts, the operating result excluding special items improved significantly.

Preliminary Group sales after 12 months were up 5 percent on the previous year’s figure (EUR 2.596 billion) at EUR 2.735 billion. Despite a number of countervailing effects, the growth in volume combined with the savings made by the Focus 2012 efficiency program improved the preliminary result of operating activities (EBIT) excluding special items to EUR 28 million (previous year: EUR 3 million). Special items associated with Focus 2012 totaled EUR 65 million in the financial year just closed. Due to special items and the negative financial result, preliminary calculations indicate that the net loss will be around EUR -110 million (previous year: EUR -230 million). Preliminary incoming orders in the period under review increased to EUR 2.822 billion (previous year: EUR 2.555 billion). The preliminary free cash flow was around EUR -20 million (previous year: EUR +10 million) and thus only slightly negative despite the high one-time payments for Focus 2012.

“By meeting our forecast for the year, we have reached a key milestone on our way to profitability,” said Heidelberg CEO Gerold Linzbach. “Focus 2012 lays the foundation for us to start making a profit again from financial year 2013/2014 onwards. By means of optimized structures we have also made a start on adapting the company more effectively to the market segments in which we operate and thus increase future profit contributions,” he added.

The fourth quarter of the financial year just closed was, as expected, the strongest in terms of preliminary key figures. For example, sales for the period January to March 2013 rose to EUR 830 million (previous year: EUR 785 million). The result of operating activities excluding special items for the quarter under review improved from EUR 22 million in the previous year to EUR 60 million. Negative special items amounted to EUR 41 million in the fourth quarter alone – mainly due to provisions for stepping up specific measures as part of Focus 2012. Incoming orders in the fourth quarter were up on the previous year’s level (EUR 580 million) at EUR 620 million. The free cash flow in Q4 was clearly positive at around EUR 70 million (previous year: EUR 33 million). This reduced the net financial debt at the end of the financial year from EUR 325 million in the previous quarter to around EUR 260 million.

“Our Focus 2012 efficiency program is being implemented as planned. Given the changed market conditions, we have intensified a number of measures to secure our future profitability targets,” said Heidelberg CFO Dirk Kaliebe. “Heidelberg has a sound financial footing and benefits from a stable liquidity framework. The strong free cash flow in the final quarter has reduced the net financial debt to a low level.”

As of March 31, 2013, the Heidelberg Group had a workforce of 14,215 (previous year: 15,414).

Heidelberg will be publishing its complete, certified consolidated annual financial statements on June 13, 2013.

Chesapeake’s Branded Packaging division will extend its range of creative print finishes available to the premium spirits, fine confectionery and personal care markets it serves with the purchase of the longest ever printing press in the format 70 x 100 produced by Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg). The Speedmaster XL 106 perfector, which has been installed at Chesapeake East Kilbride, has a staggering 17 print units – ten printing units, three coating units, four drying units and an in-line cold foiling option.

Tim Whitfield, Vice-President of Chesapeake Branded Packaging says: “East Kilbride supplies some of the world’s most prestigious brands and many of the packs it produces demand an ultra-high quality finish and outstanding shelf appeal. This significant investment will bring a number of processes inline providing greater quality control. We will be able to provide multiple colour applications, foiling and an even greater range of matt, gloss and pearlescent finishes, including metallics, spot and solid applications.”

The press is equipped with coating units both before and after printing and perfecting that will allow Chesapeake East Kilbride to provide customers with a range of finishes and effects inside as well as outside the box. It will provide customers with a greater choice of substrate options, without compromising a pack’s aesthetic appeal.

The press is part of a major company-wide investment programme. Chesapeake Branded Packaging’s carton operations in the UK, Germany and Poland have all benefited from significant press investments in the last two years. The investment in East Kilbride follows the UK’s first Heidelberg VLF packaging press at its sister plant in Newcastle. That site runs the Speedmaster XL145 which has seven printing and two coating units, interdeck drying and extended delivery and also a high specification Speedmaster XL 105.

Jim Todd, sales director of Heidelberg UK, says: “This latest B1 press is a huge step forward in technology. This is a press that will satisfy both current and future brand-owner requirements. This press has really advanced technical features such as AutoPlate XL plate-changing and Logistics fully automated materials handling. These help to maximise efficiency and service and to seamlessly integrate into any facility. The installation at Chesapeake certainly stands out being described internally as a “flying submarine”!

French print shop Kapp Graphic in Evreux, Normandy, has opted for a press from Heidelberger Druckmaschinen (Heidelberg) for the first time, investing over EUR 3 million in a large-format Speedmaster XL 162 four-color press to replace a competitive product. The new press, which is due to be delivered in the first half of 2013, is fitted with the Prinect Inpress Control inline color measuring and control system, which controls color and register accuracy on the fly, thus ensuring short makeready times and minimal paper waste.

Kapp Graphic specializes in producing illustrated books and point-of-sale advertising and is also looking to use the new press to produce advertising brochures. The print shop was taken over in 2010 by Christian Devambez, who is also the managing director of print shops Lescure Théol in Douains, Normandy and Soregraph in Nanterre, close to Paris. Together, these three companies are leaders on the French market for offset and digital print products.

Before reaching his decision, Devambez visited several production sites throughout Europe and saw for himself the performance capabilities of large-format XL technology in terms of reliability, productivity, and print quality. The characteristic features of this Peak Performance press are extremely short makeready times, high production speed, less waste, excellent color stability, and outstanding print quality. The press is also user-friendly and therefore saves valuable time. In particular against the background of shorter runs and tighter delivery deadlines, the Speedmaster XL 162 lives up to all expectations while also ensuring a top quality end product.

Kapp Graphic is part of the Imprifrance Group and currently has a workforce of 27 employees with annual sales of EUR 4.8 million. The company has the Imprim’Vert label and FSC/PEFC certification.

“My entire family was into farming, but I wanted to do something different. I liked challenges. Nature greatly inspired me with its myriad colours and designs and I had a deep urge to learn new things. I saw the possibility of manifesting my ideas in printing and I grew increasingly inclined towards it”, admits Dyaneshwar Patil, candidly.

In 1998, Dyaneshwar graduated in Printing Technology from Pune’s ‘Vidyarthi Griha’s Maharashtra Institute of Printing Technology’ and it was no looking back thereafter. Just two years after his graduation, he single-handedly started Shree Someshwar Printers in Nasik and also managed to create a client base.

Even though obstacles were galore in the initial phases, it was Dyaneshwar’s determination that helped the business sail through the rough waters. In the beginning he ventured into commercial printing and bookmaking, with his next target being packaging.

Shree Someshwar Printers’ success story starts with Dyaneshwar who is at the helm and is ably supported by three key members; Deepak Dattatraya – Factory Manager, Santosh Tidke – Marketing Manager and Ganesh Gadge – Production in charge, and not to forget his army of fifteen dedicated and skilled workforce.

The precursor to the real transformation of Shree Someshwar Printers came in 2003, when Dyaneshwar first came to know about Heidelberg. “I was really impressed by what I had read about Heidelberg, and my enquiries in the market received positive feedbacks. I then decided to adopt Heidelberg technology”, says Dyaneshwar.

This decision was firmed after witnessing live demos of Heidelberg presses at an Indian exhibition called PAMEX, in Nov 2011. On probing about his experience, he shared, “I was floored by the way Heidelberg’s presses performed. Whatever I had heard about Heidelberg turned out to be absolutely true. It was incredible and deep down I knew that my dream would get further impetus with Heidelberg. I there and then decided that I would go with Heidelberg’s Speedmaster SM 74 press. And in late 2012, the press was installed”.

The Speedmaster SM 74 – a great press with great value for money is meant for medium-format applications. With a production speed up to 15000 sheets per hour, it can handle wide range of substrates from light weight paper (0.03 mm) to (0.60 mm) board. Also, the Prinect Press Center with Intellistart process-oriented operator guidance system provides user-friendly and ergonomic operations.

“The benefits that Heidelberg SM 74 offers are multifold and quite impressive. The jobs I used to do on two presses earlier are now handled by SM 74 alone and in addition, it also caters to extra jobs. This speaks volumes about the productivity of Heidelberg presses and helps printers like me to save on manpower, time and money. Even the power consumption has been low and the wastage is reduced. Thequality it yields is the best we have churned so far and the reliability of the press is immense. Henceforth, I will be using only Heidelberg’s equipment, whatever may be the application. It’s a lifetime commitment with Heidelberg” admits Dyaneshwar.

Currently Shree Someshwar Printers caters to Education, Pharma, Agriculture and Automobile industries. With a clear focus on the future growth, Dyaneshwar forthrightly mentions, “I am looking forward to having one more setup, and of course only with Heidelberg. It would be a one-stop-printing providing a variety of printing solutions”.

At the moment their post-press division hosts cutting machines, one punching machine, one UV coating machine and one Stahlfolder folding machine, while the pre-press is outsourced. Someshwar is known for their timely services, quality management and well-planned production.

Shree Someshwar Printers is also certified as an ISO 9001:2008 company. Dyaneshwar emphasizes, “Without Heidelberg, the ISO certification wouldn’t have been possible. They have been very supportive right from initial discussions, installation to post-installation. The training they impart to our operators was extremely useful. Similarly, I give credit to all my employees as they too have given their 100%. I believe that for a quality output, besides having quality machinery, one also needs to have a quality workforce. I have ensured my employees’ welfare at all times from helping them financially to giving them moral support whenever the need be”.

According to Dyaneshwar, buying the Heidelberg Speedmaster SM 74 is his biggest achievement. “After I installed the Heidelberg Speedmaster SM 74, we did some commercial printing jobs for a New Delhi based client that was earlier done in Delhi itself. Not only was the job well appreciated and complimented by our client, but they decided to do all their jobs at Someshwar in future. Today we are the most sought after printer in the whole of Nasik, setting new benchmarks. Thanks to our lifelong printing partner – Heidelberg and our team at Someshwar”, sums Dyaneshwar.

Anicolor technology from Heidelberg for profitable short-run printing

How can I make money as a printer in the Internet age? At the end of January, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG demonstrated a possible answer to some 150 customers at its Anicolor Days event. Under the slogan “The profitable way to faster inking-up”, the company showed how Anicolor can reduce paper waste to a tenth of its previous level and make even short runs profitable again.

More than 250 print shops worldwide are already using the inking unit technology launched in 2006 to deliver a cost-effective response to ever shorter print runs and frequent job changes.

Anicolor in figures means: 90 – 50 – 50. Up to 90 percent less paper waste, makeready times cut by half, and productivity increased by 50 percent. This applies to both formats for which Heidelberg offers Anicolor technology – small (35 x 50 centimeters/13.78 x 19.69 inches) and medium (50 x 70 centimeters/19.69 x 27.56 inches). Medienhaus Reuffurth is one of the first print shops to use the Speedmaster XL 75 Anicolor. Even in the field test, paper waste was 65 percent lower than with the conventional Speedmaster XL 75.

What’s more, this offset technology works perfectly with the digital printing solutions offered by Heidelberg. For example, drucken 123 – Offsetdruck Müller combines a Speedmaster SM 52 Anicolor with the Linoprint C 751 digital printing system and the Prinect workflow to successful effect. Hybrid production is used for one in six print jobs at this print shop. Non-variable contents such as the inside pages of a brochure are produced on the Anicolor using offset printing. The variable data on the cover is printed on the Linoprint.

Daimler AG is now using software from Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) at all its development sites to check the quality of product data in the CAD environment (CAx data). The quality of CAx data has a key impact on costs throughout the product life cycle.

“Daimler’s decision to use software from Heidelberg is a major vote of confidence in us,” says Stephan Plenz, Member of the Management Board responsible for Heidelberg Equipment. “It is a milestone in our strategy of using innovative products to break into customer segments outside the print media industry.”

At the touch of a button, the CAx Quality Manager from Heidelberg checks the quality of product data for the entire process chain – from development and production to assembly and service. Users can check individual components, complete assemblies, or drawings. The system indicates errors, suggests corrections, and documents all results, which enables errors to be identified and rectified at an early stage. It also improves the quality of the existing CAx data, which provides a sound basis for modifying and further developing products.

Heidelberg has been using the system to check its own CAx data for around six years and has been continuously improving the software. Particular benefits of the current version include intuitive operation and the speed of the checking process. Users can run the software in their existing work environment without much need for training and can also add their own checking routines. What’s more, the software supports the configuration of CAD-models in line with customized CAx methods and standards.

Heidelberg launched the CAx Quality Manager onto the market in summer 2012 and has so far won more than 30 customers with the benefits of the product.

Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG distributes CAx Quality Manager through Heidelberg Engineering Consulting. This unit is a highly specialized center of competence for CAD, CAM, CAE, and PLM.
