Based in the bustling town of Sivakasi, Bell Printers has taken several steps to upgrade their press and postpress facilities to match international standards of infrastructure and quality.
The company is the first one in India to have installed the Heidelberg Varimatrix 105 CS die-cutter along with a Heidelberg Speedmaster SM 102 four-colour press and Polar 115 XC cutting equipment.
Vashikaran Rajendrasingh, Managing Director of Bell Printers, says, “We are happy to be the pioneers in adapting Heidelberg’s Varimatrix 105 CS die-cutter. From our earliest years, we have experienced Heidelberg’s performance and technology and the combination of Speedmaster SM 102 and Varimatrix 105 CS is just what we needed to accomplish 100% of our packaging requirements.”
“Our company has always believed in innovative ideas and the use of latest technology. When most printers here concentrated on domestic commercial and packaging jobs, we targeted the overseas market.” adds Vashikaran, who has graduated in “engineering-design” from U.K. and has a passion for design.
The company is a part of the Bell Group, which runs several educational institutions and hotels across Tamil Nadu. Bell Printers, originally named “Chellsons Fine Arts”, was well-known for large format poster printing and also won the “The Best Printer” award for two consecutive years at an Indian Tradeshow called PAMEX. The company was initially established with the motto of catering to the print requirements of the Bell Group, and later ventured into commercial and packaging printing. In 2007, it was renamed as Bell Printers with Mr. Rajasingh as the chairman of the company.
Today, the company operates in a 30,000 sq.ft. production facility with 130 employees. In the press section, they have a brand new Heidelberg Speedmaster SM 102 four-colour press, one Heidelberg SM 52, a four-colour press and two, two-colour UV presses. The postpress section is equipped with a Polar-cutter, binding equipment, a folder gluer and of course, a Varimatrix 105 CS.
Varimatrix 105 CS comes with an inline cutting and stripping unit and runs at a maximum speed of 7,500 sheets per hour. The equipment can process substrates with thickness ranging from 80 gsm paper to 1400 gsm board and corrugated board up to a maximum thickness of 4 mm (0.16 inches). Sheet formats ranging from a minimum of 350 X 400 mm (13.78 x 15.75 inches) to a maximum of 750 x 1050 mm (29.53 x41.34 inches) can be processed with the Varimatrix.
The equipment is also ideal for short-run jobs. Its variable chase can take different cutting sizes and it is even possible to re-use existing die-cutting tools. In the cutting and stripping station, the tools are arranged on arms which can be swung out of the cutting station and folded away again. The key features of the Varimatrix are direct switch-over of side lays from pull to push mode, touch screen menu for easy operation and shorter make-ready times.

On overall business outlook, Vashikaran elucidates,” We have loyal customers from India, who rely on us for premium quality jobs and timely delivery. Our concentration is now more on the export segment since there is great potential in Europe and the Middle East. We also have a dedicated in-house creative team that works on customized calendars and cards for the overseas market.”
About the recent Heidelberg SM 102 press installation, Vashikaran says, “The SM 102 press is meant for high productivity and shorter make-ready times. We are running the press at the max. speed (13,000 sph) with two shifts per day; it is extremely efficient, reliable and easy to operate.” In the postpress division, the recently installed Polar 115 XC high speed cutter, with its wider range of functions offers quicker make-ready times and higher efficiency.
The POLAR XC cutter comes with TFT colour display screen which avoids program errors; cutting can be done by three easy ways of programming: Manual programming by data input via keyboard, programming when cutting (cut and record), block programming with automatically added logical functions. The patented Polar Direct Positioning System (DPS) ensures easy placement of desired back gauge position and précise cutting position. Yet another advantage is the nickel refined wider machine table for easy handling of sheets.

Bell Printers currently caters to Hospitality, FMCG, Pharma and Packaging segments. The company has been growing steadily at the rate of 30 – 35 % annually. Vashikaran takes care of operations and a seven member team works on marketing and business development under his supervision.
On expansion plans, Vashikaran says, “We will be investing in prepress and commercial postpress solutions to increase our productivity. We want to position Bell Printers as a premium print-shop for commercial and packaging printing in India”.
